Many have heard by now, the article that is making headlines around the world, about the California girl who was found after being held in captive by he kidnapper for 18 years. She was allegedly kidnapped in 1991 while walking to her bus stop. She also gave birth to her kidnapper's 2 children during this time. An article is available here:

I just wanted to post my thoughts about this criminal phenomenon. It just absolutely baffles me that something like this could happen - much less, somebody could MAKE it happen. To make matters even worse, however, not only did one kidnapper make this happen, but his WIFE was in on it too. I mean, does a wife just allow her husband to have sex with an 11 year old girl and not say anything about it? I cannot comprehend what was going on in these people minds.

I also do not quite understand how somebody can be held by a kidnapper for such a long period of time - unless the girl was cooperative. It is said that she was held in this mans backyard, in a seemingly residential area or subdivision. The area was heavily wooded, and makeshift buildings and tents were arranged in the backyard, so I suppose it is somewhat reasonable that nobody would have seen her. But what about noise? I imagine that, at least in the beginning, she would have struggled - why didn't anyone hear her scream? What about the first time he raped her, or when she birthed the children right in his backyard? These are not quiet occurences. Or what about after the babies were born - they must have cried at least occasionally.

The saddest part though, is that this young woman has had 18 years of life stolen from her. She did not get an education past the seventh grade, and she didn't get to experience all the things that little girls, teenagers and young women should typically get to experience. Was her first kiss from her kidnapper? Did he ever teach her anything? Or let her read newpapers to keep up on current events? How strange it must be to re-enter the world after nearly 2 decades in captivity. A lot has changed in that time.

And what is she to do now? With no education and 2 children - who are now 15 and 11, and have never seen a doctor or been to school - it seems her life is already mapped out for her. So sad, because maybe she could have really been somebody. Maybe she still can, who knows. But life is not about to get much easier for her very quickly.

My heart goes out to this woman - Jaycee Lee Dugard - as she must be an incredibly strong person to have survived such events, and still remained, as police say "in good spirits."

Let me know your thoughts on this! What would be the first thing you would do coming out of captivity after such a period of time?
Best Regards,
Meggyn
